They all have little or no income and don’t function well. While I’m happy I never tried heroin, I’m worried that this same effect might apply to some degree with booze. I’m worried I’ll never get to be that happy again.
There’s a connection between consuming alcohol and boredom. You may be a single parent, widowed, or unmarried and living alone. You might be retired or house-bound due to a medical condition or injury.
Why Are You Bored Without Alcohol?
This really helped I hadn’t thought of the chemical connection and that makes sense and knowing these drinking because of boredoming will get better is a relief cos they are not great. I’m quite introverted so relearning to socialise is challenging. I’m 3 months in and the anxiety is really hard. I go home earlier and I assume everyone’s having more fun but I still love my friends even if i worry they love me a little less now I”m sober. I’m forced to deal with the emotions rather than bury them which I know deep down is better. It’s like relearning to have fun again, but actually the longer I’m sober the more supportive other people are of it. Instead I’m drinking coffee, listening to the birdsong and planning my day.
But sobriety also creates more time, space, and energy to live into our authentic selves. One common approach is to examine your underlying assumptions. Spotting these faulty beliefs and challenging them can help you feel less bored or at least less bothered by boredom. Keep in mind that your boredom may be trying to tell you something. Your problem is usually not that you have nothing to do, but rather that no available option seems appealing, engaging, or satisfying. Your brain may be trying to tell you something. Perhaps your usual activities don’t promote ends you really care about or perhaps your values or priorities have changed in ways you haven’t acknowledged.

It’s pretty normal to feel bored in early sobriety, but it’s kind of related to not being used to feeling calm or peace. The feeling of things being too quiet or empty does pass. The activity of drinking is not a fun, exciting, or interesting activity. It has no power whatsoever to relieve boredom.
Join A Support Group
I had a nap after work and I have a beer in the fridge that I was planning on having later as my “last drink ever”. And then I just thought…why am I doing this? I’m just bored and it’s just my habit. I want this beer about as much as I want to do my laundry. I went and bought soda water and fruit and I’m now trying to figure out what to do with my evening instead. Though boredom in early recovery can be challenging, remember that many before you have figured out how to sustain the changes they want for themselves. List the things you’ve previously thought of to keep busy when feeling bored that you are not willing to do, and ask yourself why.
